Overview
The aim and objectives of the OPITO Initial Training Programme are to provide the learner with knowledge of the rigging principles, general hazards and risks of rigging and lifting operations, an awareness of relevant legislation and regulation, and an opportunity to practice basic rigging operations following a lifting plan.
Completion of the workplace experience logbook takes place on-site where personnel will complete workplace requirements under supervision.
Unit 1 – The role of the rigger and an introduction to lifting operations.
The learner will understand:
- The role of the rigger
- Introduction to lifting operations – relevant legislation and management of the hazards
Unit 2 – Rigging and lifting operations.
The learner will understand:
- The principles of rigging and lifting
- How to prepare for the lifting operation
Unit 2 – Rigging and lifting operations.
The learner will perform:
- Preparation for lifting operations
- Restoring the work area and post-operation responsibilities
- Carrying out the lifting operation

STRUCTURE: A mix of theoretical and practical delivery sessions where learners can demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the rigger standard
