bp and ASCO shared a vision to achieve international energy management certification for the bp warehouse in Aberdeen at D2, Dyce that ASCO manages. While operations ran smoothly, energy efficiency had room to improve, so both organisations pursued ISO 50001 in line with net-zero ambitions.

Approach
A cross-functional Energy Management Team was established, bringing together warehouse operations, facilities, HSSEQ, procurement, and management.
The team began with a detailed energy review, mapping all significant consumption and establishing a baseline. This highlighted where energy use could be optimised and informed clear performance targets. An energy policy was developed and embedded across operations, aligning daily activities with broader sustainability goals.
Implementation focused as much on engagement as on systems. Employees were engaged through toolbox talks, posters, energy champions, and management-led sessions, with teams encouraged to suggest improvements, fostering a culture of energy efficiency.
Processes and documentation were updated to meet ISO 50001 requirements, including an EnMS manual integrated into ASCO’s quality management system. Performance was monitored continuously, with quarterly management reviews to assess progress, track actions, and discuss further opportunities for improvement.
Two team members trained as ISO 50001 auditors, conducting internal audits and preparing the warehouse for the external LRQA certification. The approach combined leadership, structured processes, and staff engagement to successfully embed the EnMS while improving energy efficiency across all operations.
