14,000 tonnes of methanol regenerated through managed off-site processing

A leading energy operator required a reliable off-site solution to process and regenerate water-rich methanol used as a hydrate inhibitor during gas transfer to its onshore processing facility.

Their own methanol processing unit was being upgraded and was temporarily unavailable, creating a critical need to maintain methanol supply and support continuity of operations. As methanol is a valuable resource, the client wanted to avoid disposal of the water-rich product and reduce the requirement to purchase virgin replacement material.

ASCO was engaged to deliver a safe, compliant and commercially effective regeneration route, managing the full process from tanker collection through to storage, specialist regeneration and return of the regenerated product to the required specification.

At a glance

  • Delivered a fully managed off-site methanol regeneration solution, helping the client maintain supply while its own processing unit was unavailable.
  • Coordinated tanker collection, permitted storage, specialist regeneration and return of regenerated methanol to the client’s required specification.
  • Supported operational continuity through close communication with the client and on-site team, aligning tanker movements and product returns with stock requirements.

Approach

ASCO developed and coordinated an end-to-end managed service covering the collection, movement, storage, processing and return of water-rich methanol.

Tanker collections were scheduled from the client’s gas plant and transported to a permitted facility for storage before being transferred to a specialist facility for regeneration. Once processed, regenerated methanol was returned to the client at the required specification, helping maintain operational stock levels and reduce reliance on virgin methanol.

Throughout the project, ASCO worked closely with the client and on-site team to manage tanker movements, monitor product requirements, and support the transition back to the client’s own processing unit once it became available.

When the client’s plant experienced a further issues, ASCO was able to respond at short notice, stepping in to manage additional batches of water-rich methanol and maintain continuity.

Impact

The client received a controlled, compliant and commercially effective solution that protected operational continuity while reducing waste and supporting resource recovery.

By regenerating the methanol rather than sending it for disposal, ASCO helped the client recover value from a critical product, reduce the need for replacement virgin methanol and simplify the management of multiple service elements through a single coordinated solution.

Regular communication with the on-site team ensured tanker movements and product returns were aligned with stock requirements, helping avoid disruption during a period when the client’s own processing capability was unavailable.

Results

  • 29,000 tonnes of water-rich methanol collected
  • Approximately 1,150 tanker loads managed
  • 14,000 tonnes of regenerated methanol returned to the client
  • Approximately 625 tanker loads of regenerated product returned
  • Fully managed collection, storage, regeneration and return process delivered
  • Responsive support provided during additional plant upset
