Round-the-clock marine assurance when reliability mattered most for Equinor

During the development of the Mariner field, Equinor relied on internal resource to provide day-shift marine coordination across its UKCS operations. As vessel activity increased and operational risk rose, it became clear that a 24/7 service led by experienced mariners would improve safety, strengthen control, and reduce the operational strain placed on offshore teams. Equinor needed a model that could streamline vessel movements, stabilise scheduling and logistics, and ensure continuous marine oversight during a period of intense activity.

Marine Coordination 2

At a glance

  • Provided round-the-clock marine coordination for Equinor’s Mariner field, managing all vessel movements and offshore logistics to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Streamlined scheduling, routing, and reporting, reducing workload on offshore teams and delivering measurable time and fuel savings.
  • Maintained continuous oversight and communication, giving Equinor confidence in operational safety and control during a critical development phase.

Approach

From our Marine Control facility in Aberdeen, a team of five experienced mariners provided continuous 24/7 coordination for the Mariner field. They managed all Platform Supply Vessels (PSV) and Emergency Response and Rescue Vessels (ERRV) movements in line with Equinor’s procedures and delegated authority limits.

We maintained disciplined daily coordination with Equinor, aligning plans across onshore and offshore teams and adapting to shifting weather conditions, vessel priorities and operational constraints.

The team handled all routing decisions, managed quayside and berthing requirements, maintained voyage metrics, issued marine reports, and ensured efficient turnaround of vessels. This round-the-clock coordination reduced workload on offshore personnel, tightened planning, and ensured marine operations remained safe, controlled and efficient throughout the development phase.

Impact

  • £174k in time efficiency
  • £53k in fuel efficiency

Over an initial six-month period, time and fuel efficiency gains were significant, saving Equinor time and money avoiding potential safety interventions, and production losses.

Our marine coordination model delivered a far more stable and confident marine operation, improving vessel utilisation, communication, and reporting. Above all, Equinor gained round-the-clock assurance that its marine activity was being managed safely by experienced mariners at a time when reliability mattered most.

Testimonial

“Utilisation of the ASCO Marine Coordination service has been of huge benefit to Equinor. The service provided us with marine operational and technical expertise 24/7, whilst ensuring a safe and more efficient marine operation during a very important period, the development of Mariner. Confidence in marine operations breeds confidence within our supply chain and ASCO Marine Control is essential in making this happen."
